Pilling Happens – And That’s not a bad Thing!

If you’ve ever noticed little fuzzy balls forming on your favourite handknits, don’t panic—this is completely normal, especially when working with natural fibres.

Yarns made from fibres like wool, alpaca, cotton, and possum are made up of shorter staple fibres. With everyday wear (think movement, friction, and even washing), some of these fibres work their way to the surface and tangle together, forming what we call “pilling.” It tends to show up most in high-friction areas like underarms, cuffs, and sides.

Far from being a flaw, pilling is actually a sign you’re working with a genuine, minimally processed fibre. Many beautifully soft yarns are more prone to pilling because they haven’t been coated or strengthened with synthetics. In other words—soft, natural, and lovely often comes with a little extra fluff at first.

The good news? Pilling usually settles down over time as those loose fibres are worked out. And when it does appear, it’s very easy to manage.

Keeping Your Knits Looking Fresh

A quick tidy-up now and then will have your garments looking as good as new. At Skeinz, we’ve got two simple tools that make this job easy—each with its own strengths depending on your fibre.

The gentle option: Sweater Stone

Our Sweater Stone is made from natural pumice and works by gently lifting pills away from the surface of your garment. It’s a low-tech, effective solution that’s especially suited to delicate fibres.

Because it’s gentle, it’s ideal for:

  • Possum blends
  • Alpaca
  • Softer, halo-style yarns

It’s also wonderfully versatile—you can even use it on things like polar fleece or upholstery . Think of it as the “slow and careful” option that treats your knits with a bit of extra kindness.

The quick fix: Fabric Shaver

If you’ve got a garment that’s had a bit more wear (or you just want fast results), the Premium Electric Fabric Shaver is your best friend.

This tool trims pills off cleanly and efficiently, making it perfect for:

  • Wool and merino garments
  • Everyday knits
  • Heavier fabrics or larger areas

It’s designed to remove lint and pilling smoothly from a wide range of fabrics and keep garments looking “freshly knitted” . If the sweater stone is your gentle tidy, the fabric shaver is your full refresh.

So… which one should you use?

  • Delicate, fibres with a halo you want to keep (alpaca, possum, mohair): go for the sweater stone
  • Sturdier yarns or heavier pilling: reach for the fabric shaver
  • A well-loved garment needing a full tidy-up: fabric shaver first, then stone for finishing touches

The Bottom Line

Pilling isn’t a problem, it’s part of the natural life cycle of your knitwear. It tells you your yarn is real, untreated, and doing exactly what natural fibres do.

With a little care (and the right tool), it’s easy to keep your pieces looking beautiful for years to come. And really, a quick de-pill now and then is a small price to pay for the comfort and honesty of natural fibre.
