Winter 2011 June Update

Hello Yarn Lovers!

It has been a busy time at Skeinz, both at the yarn store in Napier & at skeinz.com.  The crazy weather hasn’t deterred knitting & every day we delight in helping you get your projects off to a great start.  At Skeinz we’ve seen plenty of new knitters & new crocheters – the Learn to Crochet magazine series has inspired many to get ‘hooked’ and crocheted blankets, scarves & hats are popping up everywhere.

I have been inspired so much I have dusted off my old hooks & have had a fiddle around studying up on lost or forgotten techniques.  The new Tree Cosy initiative has been great to put these latent skills to the test & over the weekend I fiddled around with our Southlander Yarn & a 5 mm hook. I thought I would crochet a circular cover for our foot rest at home.  Too much TV watching and a few too many wines later, I was a little over zealous with my increasing, so decided that cover could turn into bag, then as I starting to shape the bag & decrease, I realized I was running low on yarn, time for plan C, a Tam hat!  Modeled above by my youngest son, this hat actually fits me. The moral of all of this?  Knitting or crochet is a living thing, don’t be afraid to roll with the stitches & see where they take you.

I mentioned Tree Cosies, Skeinz is thrilled to be part of an Art initiative with Creative Napier & Napier Inner City Marketing.  Our goal is to have as many of the 99 palm trees down Napier’s main CBD street (Emerson) adopted & decorated with knitted, crocheted, woven, or felted Tree Cosies.  Highlighting the versatility of yarn craft as an art form.  I have completed a couple of cosies myself, which you can view on my blog, or get more information about how to adopt a tree from the Skeinz blog.  You don’t need to be a Napier local either, I have had an adoption from Canada, if you want to take part & you are from outside the district or the country – just email me & I will send you adoption papers.

August is all stitched up with knit events. As well as the tree cosies Skeinz is also back as a key sponsor of Knit August Nights, knitters retreat, workshops & Knitters Market.  After the success of last year, I have increased the number or workshops available & opened up registrations to include the ability to attend just individual workshops within the retreat.  This is a great option for locals or for those who are visiting Napier, wish to attend a workshop, but not commit to the retreat as a whole.  All information can be found on the KAN:2 website.  There are workshops to suit all skill levels, it’s a great way to take the plunge & learn a new technique!

On the yarn front, Skeinz has been kept very busy keeping up with supply, especially of the super cosy Southlander, Vintage & the new Harvest yarns.  There are also a few more surprises to come this Winter, so watch this space.  The quickest way for updates is on our Ravelry forum, or watch for postings on the homepage at skeinz.com.

!! HOT CIRCUS DEAL – ONLINE ONLY !!
We are starting to get to the last of the Circus ‘Jester Monkey’ series so we have grouped them all together into a ‘Barrelful of Monkeys’.  This lucky dip is just $2.50 a ball each – a great price to stock up for charity projects, tree cosies or some bright Winter knits. Stocks are very limited & we will do our best to make the colours as similar as possible, unless you request a ‘Monkey Dip’

Happy knitting & keep your eyes peeled for new yarn arriving soon!
Cheers Maree, Suzanne & Mary – Your Skeinz team.
